Playing Catchup

March 16th, 2007 (06:29 pm)

The past couple of weeks have been tough for me, as I've been trying to put together my summer materials while keeping a steady schedule with my weekly comics. I'm just about back to my normal schedule, though.

I am just about finished with my personal contributions to the Summer-O-Fun. If I don't get any guest comics and don't put together any additional materials, I have enough for two updates a week for the rest of the summer. I don't know how the guest comics will pan out; asking for guest art is a bit of a gamble for a new comic, and I doubt I'll get anything until the last minute in any case. I do hope that I'll get at least one or two pieces, though. I'd like to see what other cartoonists can do with my characters.

prrrrt?

I am going to contribute!
I just have to get around to practicing with my tablet enough that I can actually draw with it, as scanners are scarce on study-abroad programs.

...I keep wanting to draw something with Eileen and a bird. Or Eileen as a bird. Because Vogel=bird, or at least while in Germany it does.

Can you tell I like Eileen? I think I was quite a bit like her when her age. (Even down to hair and eye color. Huh.)

And just 'cause I've not said it yet, I love this comic. I'm currently attending an all-girls college, and a lot of the stuff that happens at Blenheim actually does hold through to college.

Neat; I look forward to seeing it! Thanks for the comments, too.

I had noticed that you were a Smithie (is there another term for "Smith student" that I'm not aware of?). I actually went to a women's college too, although I've mostly used my earlier experiences for inspiration. If you haven't looked at it yet, I talk a bit about all-female education in this interview.

Who me?

If there is another term for Smithies than Smithie, I am not aware of it.
And yes, read that interview a bit ago. It really kind of makes me wish I'd been able to attend an all-girls school for longer; Smith is really great for being able to concentrate on studies, being boy-free. (Well, mostly boy-free. There was a guy who was in a couple of my math classes who I wanted to strangle at times.) I'm really missing the boy-free-ness right now, since there are guys in the study-abroad program I'm on. They're not really annoying. It's just that they're boys, and I'm not used to boys.

I think it would be a good interview to read for girls who are thinking about going to an all-girls college or parents who are thinking about sending their child to an all-girls school, as it provides a rather excellent summary of what it's like.

And rereading the bits about comic creation make me happy. I have a slight obsession with reading the blogs of artists I like, looking for stuff of that sort. I really like the art style in Alma Mater; at first, it kind of put me off a little because there really isn't anything like it out there, but once the style solidified I really started to love the artwork. (Because there isn't really anything like it out there. Go figure.)

...and I should probably go actually work on homework now, as that was a lot of babbling.

You're in luck, because the summer "programming" will contain some tutorials, along with visual aids.

I can understand being put off by an unfamiliar art style or a new comic; I have trouble getting into new works myself sometimes, although I've been a little more open-minded since I started working on my own comic. I know that I usually have to check out a comic several times before I start reading it regularly.
